Description

Defending an innocent young man, defense attorney Paul Madriani uncovers a morass of corruption and greed that leads to the highest levels of political power in this electrifying tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author Steve Martini.

One of the most successful lawyers in the country, Olinda Serna is a master at managing money as well as her influential clients. After years of fierce combat in the political trenches, Serna knows all the dirty secrets, where the bodies are buried, and how deeply they are stacked. When she’s killed in a roadside crash in the high desert of Southern California, powerful heads in Washington begin to panic, worried that their secrets may not be safe anymore.

Alex Ives, a friend of Paul Madriani’s daughter, is accused of vehicular manslaughter in Serna’s death. Ives claims he had only one drink on the night of the accident, yet he can’t remember anything between the time he left for a party north of San Diego and the moment he woke up in a hospital the next morning. He’s still dazed and a little bruised, but also obviously very afraid. After all, a woman is dead, and he’s sure he didn’t kill her.

To save an innocent young man’s life, the brilliant defense attorney must uncover everything he can about Serna and her clients—no matter how unsavory—a search that will lead him into a vortex of corruption, and at its center, a devious killer poised to strike again.

Reviews

  • Stupid conspiracy theories

The book is just one big conspiracy theory directory. Things that are just not true, half true or outright made up. Previous books by this author were pretty good. This book lacks cohesiveness and the big government conspiracy theories are totally unbelievable. I’m not sure there is a real story here. I had stop reading half way through as things got more, and more ridiculous.

Too many new characters introduced too soon in first few chapters. Hard to keep tract of. Very confusing
  • Not one of my favorites.

Steve Martini is one of my favorites, but this book was a bit convoluted. Banking and politics were confusing. Only 4 stars this time.

Super quick read with lots of action. The characters weave in and around one another like a well rehearsed dance. There aren't too many of them, and it was easy to follow the protagonist without reading the prior books with the same character. Very entertaining
  • Legal thriller meets political potboiler

This latest installment in the Madriani & Hinds saga is a very easy and pleasant read. It goes to every continent in the Northern Hemisphere with a convoluted, interesting plot that is contrived, but some how that does not matter. Upload it for a read on your spring vacation.

Started just fine, than got slow and difficult to read but it finished just fine. I would read another novel by the same author and hope it's better.

More far right political lecture than mystery. If you like Dick Cheney you'll love this book. If you are looking for an interesting read, don't bother.
