Description

Written by a famed nature illustrator and mountaineer, this 1871 book documents various adventures in the Alps. A large portion of the book concerns the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn, one of the last great Alpine peaks to be climbed and one of the deadliest peaks in the range. Whymper, four other climbers and two guides were able to reach to top, but tragedy struck on the descent. One of Whymper’s companions slipped and fell, dragging three others with him. Only Whymper and the guides survived the incident, which would haunt Whymper for the rest of his life.
