Accompanied by numerous illustrations, Sailing Alone Around the World tells the story of Joshua Slocum’s one-man circumnavigation aboard the Spray, a sloop he rebuilt and refitted himself. His journey, which lasted three years, two months and three days, saw him cross the Atlantic twice (from Massachusetts to Gibraltar and then back to South America), navigate the Strait of Magellan and cross the Pacific. After stops in Australia and South Africa, Slocum crossed the Atlantic for a third time to arrive home after a 46,000-mile journey. Slocum was the first person to sail around the world alone. This memoir was an immediate success and inspired many later travelers.
