Sappho was an Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, known for being one of the greatest lyric poets and given names such as “Tenth Muse” and “The Poetess.” Much of Sappho’s work is now lost and in fragmented form, with the exception of “Ode to Aphrodite,” but despite this she is still considered among the classics of poetry. She is well known as a symbol of love and desire between women.
