Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb spins an epic tale of loyalty, treachery, murder, and the long shadow of war…

His passport read Giovanni Rossi. But decades ago, during the Urban Wars, he was part of a small, secret organization called The Twelve. Responding to an urgent summons from an old compatriot, he landed in New York and eased into the waiting car. And died within minutes…

Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds the Rossi case frustrating. She’s got an elderly victim who’d just arrived from Rome; a widow who knows nothing about why he’d left; an as-yet unidentifiable weapon; and zero results on facial recognition. But when she finds a connection to the Urban Wars of the 2020s, she thinks Summerset—fiercely loyal, if somewhat grouchy, major-domo and the man who’d rescued her husband from the Dublin streets—may know something from his stint as a medic in Europe back then.

When Summerset learns of the crime, his shock and grief are clear—because, as he eventually reveals, he himself was one of The Twelve. It’s not a part of his past he likes to revisit. But now he must—not only to assist Eve’s investigation, but because a cryptic message from the killer has boasted that others of The Twelve have also died. Summerset is one of those who remain—and the murderous mission is yet to be fully accomplished…

Who’d have thought that the In Death series would last this long? I never get tired of rereading these books and wait on pins and needles for the next one. Catching up with Eve, Roarke, Summerset, Peabody and McNabb is like catching up with family. R. K. C.

Was going to take my time reading this one, make it last, but here I am after finishing it in 2 days. This was really great. Thoroughly enjoyed it from first to last page. Just sad we’ll now have to wait so long for the next one.

Another Eve Dallas and Roarke brilliant police procedural book. If you haven’t read any of these start with book one and read them all. Each character is well developed throughout this series and you feel like you know them and how they feel. Eve is a complex character and a heroine of justice. I preorder the next book and wait eagerly until it is published. I read about 70 mystery novels a year and this series has been and remains my all time favorite!!!

60 books in, and there’s something to be said for this one being mostly just Dallas and the bad guy. I love the developing side stories for characters like Mavis and Peabody - the house they’re renovating, or the school, or any of the other myriad of players woven through the series. But this one is just action, almost exclusively, between Eve and the killer. It was adrenaline the whole way, and with no twists or turns, detours or suspects/family members/coworkers to be ruled out. No surprises beyond the obvious surprise connection established early on. All the secondary characters were quick and efficient. No bribing with sports tickets. Just job done. It was a straightforward all out sprint to the end, with no distractions along the way. And I really enjoyed that!
