Description

These days, we commemorate the end of World War II in Europe. In which two toddlers deliberately sabotage five German army cars. How we laughed when soldiers, in the blazing sun, had to inflate the tires with bicycle pumps. That, too, is war. But read about the soup kitchen, about a hunger hunt. Then you learn to understand war. The liberation learns not only the meaning of a cracker with red jam, but also how traitors are publicly humiliated. The war has many faces, even for a toddler. I went to the soup kitchen to help mom. Going on a hunger trip was an experience! I understood that I could come along to get some extra food from the farmers. My mother and I were not told that I had to fetch wood from the forest. Adults were shot dead for that. I calmly scolded German soldiers. And they wanted to hug me too. Bah!
