Description

THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem and terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

The Assistant and the Villain series is best enjoyed in order.

I reread this book again in anticipation of Apprentice coming out and it was even better than I remembered. I loved rereading it knowing the ending and seeing how many hints and clues were tucked into even the earliest pages of the book. A fun read and not at all what I expected. Love the grumpy / sunny trope.
  • Looking forward to the next book!

I read this book as part of a book club. The length of the story is short so it’s fairly easy to read in a couple sessions. Many people told me ahead of time that the beginning is slow with a lot of world building information then picks up the pace. I agree, but I found that it was rather easy to get into the story with the compelling characters and humor throughout. Kingsley definitely is a show stopper and offers comic relief much like many Disney princess animal companions do. I feel like the humor is akin to that of Princess Bride, Monty Pythons and the Holy Grail, and the Shrek movies. I love how the FMC starts as a people pleaser and slowly develops her own sense of self confidence to trust her own decisions. The POV changes between the FMC and MMC and both are enjoyable to read. I’d highly recommend watching the author’s TikTok videos (also viewable in a compiled playlist on YouTube) prior to reading to get a sense of the type of humor and a sense of how the FMC is to get the most out of this story. Satisfying plot twists and the ending sets up a great setup for book 2.

I’ve followed the author on TikTok since the beginning and I’ve been so excited for this book just from watching her skits from them ❤️ it definitely lives up to expectations and exceeds them

Just… no. It feels like the first book this author has ever written. Maybe it is? The writing style is very immature. If there weren’t the oddly placed curse word and the love interest, I would give this to my elementary age daughter to read. Take this review for what you will, as I couldn’t stand to even finish the book. It became increasingly annoying, and that’s not why I read.

***Spoilers*** Good story, creative and intriguing characters. I was hooked as soon as Trystan and Sage meet in the woods. Great chemistry and banter. I wish I felt that level of intrigue and enthusiasm throughout my reading the story. It dipped. The chemistry came in small fleeting moments or interactions. Nuggets but never enough. Different POVs added something and I liked it. Looking back, some story details were so unnecessary. I felt like we lost trajectory and then story plot things were crammed in towards the end. Connecting the dots - not as smoothly as I like in a story. I still have questions. The specific details and hints less noticeable but really needed were glossed over too much by the author. Very abrupt ending - left me hanging.
