A woman writes to a man who mocked her to impress his friends. 

"Belonging is magic. It automatically creates an identity. It elevates people. It makes them feel important, respected. Sometimes it will make them feel smarter, superior, above everyone else. Because everyone in the group validates and reinforces the other one's illusions, fantasies, prejudices, lies. And, in a magical fashion, everything one does in a group is right; as long as everyone in it is doing it, and because everyone in it is doing it.   
It is shocking how casually and nonchalantly people have abused and sacrificed others, as long as everyone in their group was doing it.
