Joseph Andrews, his beloved Fanny, and his good friend Parson Adams may be three of the most virtuous and pure acting individuals to inhabit a fictional world, yet in this hilarious and satirical novel by Henry Fielding, it is every other character they encounter who acts like they are the truly Christian ones while our three heroes are ridiculed, taunted, villified, arrested, and generally abused by all they meet. The novel follows the three main characters as they travel around the English countryside, their own honest and well-intentioned actions finding conflict with a variety of thiefs, lovers, judges, parsons, self-declared Christians, and others, who talk the good talk but turn out to be nothing more than selfish, deceptive scoundrels.
