Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling (mostly true) memoir from the hilarious author of Furiously Happy.

“Gaspingly funny and wonderfully inappropriate.”—O, The Oprah Magazine

When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.

In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives.

Although she does have an interesting story to tell she spends way too much time going off topic and rambling about things that aren’t real or funny. And just because you use the f word, it doesn’t make the story funny. I just couldn’t get through this book. I tried. I made it over half way and finally asked myself why I was trying so hard. Would not recommend.

Much as I dislike leaving a negative review, I think there needs to be another perspective since there are so many positive reviews for this book. I just didn’t care for the style of writing and the humor wasn’t funny to me. I made it 90 pages into the story and just had to stop. I think this is one of those books that just doesn’t suit everyone, but obviously many people loved it!

This book truly made me laugh out loud several times. I love the writer’s casual but witty writing style, and the way she goes off on hilarious tangents reminds me of several of my own conversations with friends. Sometimes we need to just read something that makes us smile, and this book doesn’t disappoint.

I stayed up all night listening to this audiobook. It was so funny, I had to look up her other books, and subscriber to her blog. Some of the stories were so funny I almost peed myself. And it's so refreshing when mental illness is treated as it should be, openly and honestly with humor.

This is more a collection of anecdotes than a coherent narrative. It is funnier in small doses. Author does record potentially painful memories and uses humor to defuse them, which is very courageous. However, her style of constantly stating and then retracting information wears thin after the first couple of chapters. Wish I had just read her blog instead.

But I didn't. There were hysterically funny parts that made me laugh wildly. There were many times I just lost track and lost interest. In fact I don't think I actually finished reading the book. I've read an excerpt from her new book and was really amused, which is why I read this one first. But honestly, now I'm not so sure.

I can appreciated her warped sense of humor. One of the funniest books I have read.
