An Inconvenient Affair

Althea Jameson, a young widow, has no desire to marry again. After her difficult marriage, she prizes her independence, and her friendship with Jeremy, the Viscount Stanton. It is only when his engagement to another woman is announced that she realizes she loves him.

Jeremy can't marry for love, not with the debts his father left. Marriage to Miss Evadne Powell seems just the thing. Evadne is young, pretty, and charming. Jeremy, a veteran of the Peninsular War, is restless and energetic, and ready to settle down. He is also in love with someone else: Althea.
