Description

"If you survive your first day, I'll promote you."

So promised George Wilson's World War II commanding officer in the hedgerows of Normandy -- and it was to be a promise dramatically fulfilled. From July, 1944, to the closing days of the war, from the first penetration of the Siegfried Line to the Nazis' last desperate charge in the Battle of the Bulge, Wilson fought in the thickest of the action, helping take the small towns of northern France and Belgium building by building.

Of all the men and officers who started out in Company F of the 4th Infantry Division with him, Wilson was the only one who finished. In the end, he felt not like a conqueror or a victor, but an exhausted survivor, left with nothing but his life -- and his emotions.

If You Survive

One of the great first-person accounts of the making of a combat veteran, in the last, most violent months of World War II.

George Wilson’s work here is the most riveting account of infantry combat that I have read. His portrayal of the pain and heartache of battle is graphically displayed here. All the contradictions of command in small unit engagements are shown clearly in this stupendous work. Bravo! Lieutenant Wilson.

It is hard to imagine doing the heroic things people like this author did for his fellow soldiers and his country. This books was very well written and hard to put down. If you've seen movies like Band if Brothers this is a must read as the parallels are amazing.

I believe most people would enjoy this account of a young U S Army officer combat experience in the European theater of WW II.

This is an excellent book by a very reflective man. I am sorry that he has passed before he could learn about how his readers felt about it, and his many sacrifices.

A great story or courage and in some cases costly mistakes of leaders. Incredible courage and sacrifice by junior officers at company level. Vivid description of the horror of combat and living conditions.

This is an outstanding book and very readable. One of the best WWII books I've read. This book makes it abundantly clear why they call this group "the greatest generation." The clarity of the depiction of war is excellent. This is a must read. My thanks to the author for serving our country and for writing this great book.

The book was informative and interesting. My father fought in the same campaign. I would have liked to read more about George Wilson's life after the war, and how the war affected his life.
