Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this "wonderfully vivid, kinetic narrative" (The New York Times), the bestselling author of Voices in the Ocean captures colossal, ship-swallowing waves, and the surfers and scientists who seek them out.

For legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, hundred foot waves represent the ultimate challenge. As Susan Casey travels the globe, hunting these monsters of the ocean with Hamilton’s crew, she witnesses first-hand the life or death stakes, the glory, and the mystery of impossibly mammoth waves. Yet for the scientists who study them, these waves represent something truly scary brewing in the planet’s waters. With inexorable verve, The Wave brilliantly portrays human beings confronting nature at its most ferocious.

I'll never tow surf or catch a monster but this book makes me want to! Dramatic tales of days surfers yearn for alternating with scientific chapters that aid in the understanding of the climatic changes occurring on the planet help you appreciate what a rogue is and can be!! In a word.....terrifying!!

Wonderful, did not want it to end! The poetic descriptions of nature's power were quite beautiful and in my next life I would hope to arrive as a surfer! A great read on land, forget reading it on a cruise! I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading it again!

One of those rare books that captures the essence of the moment in such a way you feel a bit of adrenaline rush during the excitement. Nicely balanced between the supercharged insight into those insane surfers seeking monster waves and a global look at the science and scientists trying to get a handle on why mega-waves happen. The surfer stories made me jealously envious, while the wave facts and science opened my eyes to a global issue I had never considered. Well done. Only bad part was having to turn the final page.

Fabulous book. Well written. Respectful. Non fiction. All new information for me, also timely, as I am moving to Kauai this month. Any sailor who has been caught in high seas will appreciate the descriptions of the waves, I didn't know there were words. I'm on to the next Susan Casey's book. As good as Shadow Divers. Fascinating like Piracy on the High Seas.
