Description

A Great War is coming, and it will engulf the Imperium of Man. The Space Marines of the Alpha Legion, the last and most secretive of all the Astartes brotherhoods, arrive on a heathen world to support the Imperial Army in a pacification campaign against strange and uncanny forces. But what drives the Alpha Legion? Can they be trusted, and what side will they choose when the Great War begins? Loyalties are put to the test, and the cunning schemes of an alien intelligence revealed, as the fate of mankind hangs in the balance.

I’ve been reading 40k roughly in the order recommended by Apple Books, and had been bummed this installment wasn’t a direct follow up to Descent of Angels. But man, was I wrong to be sad. I loved this book. Lots of human characters to juxtapose the few aloof and mysterious Astartes. Espionage, stealth, and disloyalty (or were they actually being loyal?) swirl together to make an enjoyable sense of intended confusion. My only wish for this book was for some of the reveals to have happened later in subsequent books so we could have really soaked up the sense of mysterious wondering and build more hints and nods into the book that you wouldn’t recognize until going back to re-read. This is in my top 3 fav. 40k book so far. Cheers

Not the best, but good; I was looking for more action from the Space Marines, it had more human heroes, than I expected.

Another amazing Abnett 40k novel. He is the orignal 40k master. He even tutored Aaron Dempsky-Bowden as he was starting, so that is one reason he is so excellent as well today I believe. Dan, on top of being an AMAZING author, is an awesome guy, who helped me with a term paper I wrote on him about 5 years ago in highschool. :D This was one of the excellent books in the series. It ranks as following on my personal list of the best of the Heresy so far. A Thousand Sons Fulgrim The First Heretic ---->Legion<---- Know No Fear The first 3 in the series Mechanicum (I actually really enjoyed it, but I didnt enjoy it much the first time I read it, came back to it a year or two later and reread it and liked it much better. Not sure why.)
