Description

The first novel in the thrilling series featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box.

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police.

As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

Read this because I’m killing time waiting for new Jack Carr book. Well worth the read. Already halfway through second book.

I read this after I watched the series. The series I think combined multiple books. There were parts I liked about the show and the book. Joe became a bit more violent at the end of the book but it was understandable. Interesting hero, different type of detective story, and wonderful setting. I could do without the descriptions of female bodies, but it was written by a man , and it wasn’t often. I do like the child’s prospective, which is unique in this genre.
  • Love it! I have binged every single one of them and I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

Wyoming game warden, Joe Pickett, is an everyday guy who is so endearing and interesting. The honest way he handles all the sticky situations he gets into by going the extra mile to find truth and justice makes him a hero in the end. I also love the beautiful way CJ Box writes about the setting in the American west. The characters that CJ Box surrounds Joe with are wonderful too, especially his friend Nate and wife Marybeth.

Loved the story and how it was developed as the book went from chapter to chapter. It really made me root for certain people and hate others as I read the book.
  • Realistic, fast-paced good vs. evil story

Characters are well- drawn, and the story could be taken from any newspaper out West. Couldn’t put it down, though it shows more people at their worst, than best.

Joe Pickett is a Game Warden in the state of Wyoming. A very rugged area of the state lightly populated with outdoorsmen, survivalist’s and business owners in their small town. Weasels, nicknamed Millers Weasels have been discovered. Two men, a retired Game Warden and a deputy sheriff were already aware of this and had been in the process of killing them off due to the negative affect it would have on their personal interest’s the huge unemployment they would cause. An extremely well written and faced past read, laced with intrigue, deception and bravery. My highest recommendation!!
