Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • More than twenty years into her career, Kay Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could ruin her professionally—and personally . . .

“Cornwell remains the master of incorporating real-life science into pulse-pounding fiction.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

IN DEVELOPMENT AS THE ORIGINAL SERIES SCARPETTA STARRING NICOLE KIDMAN AND JAMIE LEE CURTIS

Kay Scarpetta’s secret military ties have drawn her to Dover Air Force Base and Port Mortuary, where she’s performing autopsies on fallen soldiers. But her new headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts—the Cambridge Forensic Center—is the first civilian facility in the U.S. to do virtual autopsies, and it is there that she encounters a devastating event.

A young man has died, apparently from a cardiac arrhythmia, eerily close to Scarpetta’s new Cambridge home. But when his body is examined the next morning, there are stunning indications that he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked inside the Center’s cooler. Various 3-D radiology scans reveal more shocking details about internal injuries unlike any Scarpetta has ever seen—details that suggest the possibility of a conspiracy to cause mass casualties. With Benton, Marino, and Lucy at her side, Scarpetta must fight a cunning, cruel—and invisible—enemy in a race against time. . . .

Confusing at first but captivating at the end!

Not the suspense filled novel that I have enjoyed in other Scarpetta series novels. Though the book was excellent, it did lack the action that I kept waiting for. Just a slight letdown.

Why do I keep reading the Scarpetta books? I don't really know, maybe boredom. Same, same, same...predictably Scarpetta stories start in ice and snow, Kay stressed out, but nevertheless heroic. Lucy excessive and with borderline criminal actions saves the day, Marino, capable and smart, still needs Kay's protection against all odds, Benton, the strong, silent type is beyond human failure, however never quite correct in his assessments, only Kay, who always cooks, but never eats or sleeps, super humanly recognizes the villain and his/her motives who without fail attacks heroic Kay in the last 2 chapters and can not win the confrontation, either dies or gets then arrested. No real plot, no build up to the plot. All seems flat, unemotional, tepid, predictable.

This book was terrible. I have read all the Scarpetta novels and have always enjoyed them to the point of losing sleep. This book took me 3 months to read. Scarpetta is dark and whiny in this book. Nothing like the confident Scarpetta of old. She needs to get over Marino and Benton drama because it's not a viable story line anymore. I won't spend money on the next book. This was an awful read.

I have had it with Cornwell. She is so full of herself, and Scarpetta likewise. The plot is so disjointed and wordy, that it is very difficult to read, let alone understand. Scarpetta thinks she is Superwoman. Everybody is against her, and she knows better than anyone else. If I had purchased this book, I would be extremely disappointed !

Good reading but if Marino irritates Scarpetta why doesn't"t she handle him??? and her insecurities are getting to me!!! Yet I found the book hard to put down.

Lots of non-medical technical jargon in this one but I really enjoyed all the insight into why Dr. Scarpetta is so driven and yet so insecure. Interestingly designed with several different story avenues which all come together very neatly at the end. Good set-up for the next one too. Thanks Ms. Cornwell; you didn't let me down.

One of the better books written by P.C. That she manages to write without graphic sex and "F'!?*' every other word is refreshing.

This story didn't take off quickly; however, it does leave you with questions at the end that make you want to continue the Scarpetta series. I enjoy reading how the characters' lives evolve. I'm a true fan and look forward to the next book.
