Description

For fans of Ali Hazelwood’s Bride and Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians series, an innocent young vampire and a powerful werewolf king are drawn together by an unexpected soul bond in the electrifying start to Kresley Cole’s New York Times bestselling Immortals After Dark series—now with a stunning new cover.

Half vampire, half Valkyrie, Emmaline spent her entire sheltered life hidden among the Lore in New Orleans surrounded by the loving, yet overbearing coven who raised her. All Emmaline Troy wanted was a trip to Paris –to investigate her parents’ mysterious deaths there all those years ago. And to finally have a small adventure and perhaps even a first kiss.

But one crowded city night, as she’s making her way down a street, she’s knocked off her feet by striking werewolf. He’s towering, intimidating, and has an infuriatingly seductive Scottish brogue. And he won’t let her go.

The Lykae King, Lachlain MacRieve, has been imprisoned in the catacombs beneath Paris for over a 150 years by his sworn Vampire enemies, but the scent of his Fated Mate on the streets above gives him the strength to finally escape from his subterranean prison. Lachlain has waited for Her for centuries, and the last thing he expects is the bewitching vampire mix who seems to want only to escape his grasp.

Yet he knows only she can soothe the fury within him and he’s determined to make her his by the next full moon.

As Lachlain convinces the hesitant but fiery Emma to accompany him to his ancestral home in Scotland, the pair will come up against ruthless creatures, ancient evil, and the irrevocable pull of Fate. Will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a warrior to his knees and turn Emma into the fighter she was born to be?

I liked it but the heroine’s wishy washy attitude was sometimes irritating... I understand trying to depict her transformation but sometimes it was a bit much...
  • Never finished. Really disappointed.

___________________________ Positives: So I never finished the book, but I’ll leave the reasons why in the negatives... What I did like, was how every character had a back story and reason of being mentioned in the book. I also thought how the author put humor into her narrating was funny at times. Especially, when the fae or whatever their called, was in a scene. I couldn’t stop laughing at their dialogue. Everyone says they don’t like this book because in the beginning he forces her to do things, but if you want me to be honest I’ve read much worse books then this. Like straight up Stockholm syndrome. He didn’t actually rape her rape her. But did touch her without permission a lot. I only read 55% of the book (or that’s what Apple Books says) and there was no real rape scene. I would say 16 years olds and up can read this. Negatives: I got really disconnected from the book basically right after they finally “do it.” Not because that’s all I wanted, but because I pushed for that point in the booking hoping it would get better, but it made me not understand what’s happening even more. I really tried to understand what the author was trying to display, but the girl Emma was just so annoying. One second she would love him then the next second she would say f*** you! Like no one was allowed to make mistakes. I understand she can’t lie and so it hard for her to make mistakes in that. But, you really got to be that heartless and go back and forth with your feelings? And when she would like him again it was feeling out of thin air! They would fight constantly and then she would be alone and love him? Makes no sense to me. I took off a star for my disconnection with the characters, plot, and overall book. (Which I’ve never stopped reading a book in the middle before so that should say something) another star because how annoying the two main characters were and another star because I just didn’t like where this book was going. I was hoping for a better story with these two. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Pages: 539 (that’s where I stopped reading) ___________________________ Rates 1-5 Plot: 1 Characters: 2 Ending: didn’t get there Beginning: 2 Details: 3 Story overall how it’s told: 2 Sexual tension: 3 Sex scenes: 3 (only read one sex scene, but a lot of foreplay) How many sex scenes: 2 (same as last comment) Overall rating: 2 ___________________________ Yes/no/maybe Would I recommend: no Would I re-read: no Would I read more books by author: maybe Would I read more books like this: yes ___________________________

Didn’t expect the FIRST two chapters to be one long rape scene. Yikes. I will never have any empathy for the main male character — didn’t even learn his name before I (digitally) slammed the book shut never to be read again. Yuck.
  • Good so far, but keeps failing to stay open

I like it so far, but I keep getting a notification that it can't authenticate and the book closes. Veeeerrryyyy frustrating.

This is the first book I read of Kresley Cole and she had me hooked! I have not found any of her books that I do not like! She catches you at the beginning of the story and doesn't let lose. Even to the point you can't wait for the next book! But these are all stand alone books. But!!!! Why wouldn't anyone want to read more of Immortals after Dark!!

Love, love, love this book and the entire Immortals After Dark series! I've probably read this story a dozen times and look forward to reading it another dozen. If you've never entered this world that Kressley Cole has created then be prepared for the ride of a lifetime. Witches, ghouls, vampires, Lykeas, Valkyrie, phantoms, demons and nymphs (those little hookers) - oh my! I hope these stories continue. I love them all. Cannot recommend them highly enough.
  • Might not even be able to finish it

Wow, the sample seemed good, but I really regret buying this. I am just over half-way through, and am fed up with the simpering weak, spineless, selfish, selfish selfish, emotionally adolescent lead female character. The main male character is ok, but his fake Scottish accent gets on my nerves. But, I could tolerate that if the female had anything likeable about her personality. But she doesn't. Did I mention how predictable she is too? "Oh Lachlan, I want you to... [things heat up, then just before the deed should occur] oops, changed my mind" I am paraphrasing, but this is essentially what I am getting so far. Maybe I will finish it just to see if there is a redeeming feature at the end...

This series is awesome! This book in the series is a bit slow but worth the read and helps set the stage for all the other books in the series. I read this twice and can't wait to read it again.
