Description

The last novel Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the enduring works of American fiction. It is the story of an old Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal: a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Using the simple, powerful language of a fable, Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of defeat and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic.

Once when I was the boy’s age and just now as an older man. Powerful story that has been in the periphery of my mind for many years. Or was it the center of my subconscious? I often thought of it when perseverance was the order of the day. One life to live. Live it to the fullest and do what you were born to do.

I wrote for my school newspaper in high school and was in an advanced literature class in Mena Arkansas my sophomore year and this book was recommended to me by my teacher for a report. It became my favorite then and still is to this day. I read it a couple of times a year now that I’m into my 40s. I have so much respect for Hemingway and dream at times of sharing in his adventures. Highly recommend!

The old man was poor, weak and alone. But the sea made him brave and strong. That’s the art.

This is my first book by Hemingway and I’m blown away at how he took a story about a man fishing and made me love the man, the boat, the fish, the boy and all other parts of this so much.
