Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere—and risk it all—in the name of love.

I read this book senior year in highschool, for any readers (especially dominican) life does not get any more dominican than this book. The catch? Its perfectly crafted with aspects stretching from latin females to the history of trujillo and so forth. Worth reading regardless of your race you will love it.

This is the kind of mastery at writing that makes you proud of sharing a heritage with Junot of being Dominican. As I read it I felt as if this was me living those things, especially because of the way he constructed the environment and the surroundings in which everything was taking place. Just superb!

This story was broken up into many chunks, it's brilliant Dominican storytelling... At it's finest. When you are at the edge of your seat trying to figure out how one part of the story that's being narrated will relate to what you think the story is about, but you're really unsure...That's good storytelling. Junot Diaz does just that.
