Description

The first Virgil Flowers novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

“Virgil Flowers, introduced in bestseller Sandford’s Prey series, gets a chance to shine...The thrice-divorced, affable member of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), who reports to Prey series hero Lucas Davenport, operates pretty much on his own..”*

He’s been doing the hard stuff for three years, but he’s never seen anything like this. In the small rural town of Bluestem, an old man is bound in his basement, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Three weeks before, a doctor and his wife were murdered. Three homicides in Bluestem in just as many weeks is unheard of. It’s also no coincidence. And it’s far from over...

I’m a fan of good crime writers like Robert B Parker and Ace Atkins. I’m also a fan of Parker’s star, Spenser. John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers is on a par with the best of Parker’s earlier efforts, with convoluted plots, witty banter and satisfying resolution. Funny and smart. I’ve read all 12 of the Flowers series and am going through them again for the pure reading delight, while awaiting further efforts.

But in typical Sanford style, too many shoot outs, and too many cops always getting shot and killed. The story would have been better without the sensationalism.

I've read everything Sanford has written - some several times. The Prey novels are great but Sanford really reinvented the entire series with the appearance of Virgil Flowers. The is the one that launched Virgil - it's outstanding, and with the exception of Heat Lightning might be the most intriguing one. If your a Sanford fan it's well worth a read. If you know the SW Minnesota/South Dakota area consider it a double bonus just to read about the area (which really is a perfect setting for bizarre rural crime). Highly recommended!

A perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and thrill. I loved the book. The story kept me guessing without being convoluted. Being a MN resident, I enjoyed the geographical connection, although this book will appeal to many regardless of the setting. GL radio turned me onto Sandford, this book being my first read, can't wait to start another this evening.
