Description

The movement of the ship seals his fate. He could be sailing anywhere, anytime, but he's not, he's going to the other side of the world. He could be anyone, but he's not, he's the son of a respectable London businessman. His crime? An error of judgement. In England, in 1812, there's no forgiveness. As the ship sails, eighteen-year-old James Tedder's seven-year sentence to Van Diemen's Land begins.

Rescuing her eldest son from slave traders in Rio de Janeiro is the most difficult thing Sarah Blay has done in the last two years. Leaving England, her life, her mother, to follow her convict husband James to the other side of the world not knowing if he lives, pales in comparison.

Will lives rebuild? Will love survive?

A good story based on facts and backed by history. Prisoners sent to Australia in the 1700’s and 1800’s seem to reform somewhat better the modern day prison systems.

Learn about the early days of development of the world’s smallest continent, Australia, by the use of convicts. I found it intriguing, well researched and educational.

This is a terrific historical novel. The characters truly bring to life what it was like for the prisoners shipped from England and their new life. The author did an excellent job of researching the history part. The characters were truly fascinating and well developed.

I’m fascinated by the stories woven around facts in this book. I’ve long been very interested in family history, but have also wished to know ancestor’s stories. This book reminds us that those who came before us were not just facts, but very real people who led lives of happiness, sorrow, good and bad times. I highly recommend this and the books following this one, which continue their stories.
