Description

When he sets out to regain his family’s heritage, he never expects to fall in love.

Cowboy Duncan McAllister has worked tirelessly to make the family ranch profitable enough to buy back the section of land hard times forced them to sell a decade ago. When the owner of that land unexpectedly dies, leaving the ranch to his city-based daughter, Duncan finally sees his opportunity.

After her business partner boyfriend runs off with an intern—and all their clients—CPA Harrison Scott retreats to her Daddy’s Hill Country ranch to decide her next move. Her father’s sudden death leaves her floundering—does she rebuild her professional career or carry on the ranch he loved? After rebuffing Duncan’s offer to buy her out, Harrison is forced to turn to her handsome neighbor to learn the ropes of ranching.

Duncan tells himself he’s just being neighborly, but their immediate attraction soon deepens. How can he convince her that he wants her even more than his beloved land when she’s already been betrayed once before?

Julia Justiss’ first book, The Rancher, in The McAllister Brothers series is filled with heartwarming moments...juxtaposed with moments that were also heart wrenching...Harrison’s journey of heartbreak on several fronts and then her self discovery of her worth and finally her belief in Duncan was rewarding and left me with a smile in my heart for the couple. This is a clean and sweet romance that will surely leave other readers with a smile in their hearts as well. I’m definitely looking forward to Grant and Brice’s stories to complete The McAllister Brothers series. This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.

One of my favorite aspects about cowboy romance is the picturesque scenes the author paints in my mind. Living in the suburbs, close to everything, I more than appreciate the beauty of the landscapes in places such as the Hill Country in Texas where this story takes place. I love the idea of owning land that has been in the family for hundreds of years. Where I live, that isn't the norm. That said, I find myself longing for some of the places I read about. And The Rancher did an incredible job of bringing me there. This story is about the love of the land, legacy and loyalty. It is a story of two people who will have to learn to trust again in their decisions and each other if they want a truly happy and fulfilled life. This book is about carrying on a legacy. Duncan McAllister grew up on land such as I described. Having lost his mother at a very young age, and then his father while barely in his teens, Duncan takes on the responsibility of running the ranch. Through financially tough times, Duncan's stepmother had to sell off some of the generations-old McAllister land. Growing up, Duncan's only goal was to buy the land back but unfortunately the gentleman who bought it loves it just a deeply and refuses to sell. And when he dies unexpectedly, the land is left to his daughter Harrison. Harrison is devastated at what life has thrown at her recently. Her heart is overflowing with sadness. Because of recent events, Harrison is no longer a trusting person. Despite her inexperience, Harrison is determined to carry on the legacy her father has left for her. It is not going to be easy and she knows that. She also knows that there are people who want to buy the ranch property from her and she worries what they'll do to make that happen. I'll tell you that the relationship between Duncan and Harrison builds steadily, but slowly due to Harrison's as well as Duncan's trust issues. Although I felt Duncan was sincere, there were more than a few times I became frustrated on his behalf because of Harrison's behavior. I felt she gave off too many mixed signals. In the end, both Harrison and Duncan became the couple I knew they would be. Their love for each other was believable and they each put the other's concerns before their own. Both seeming to make sacrifices for the other but in the end both gaining everything they dreamed of. The Rancher is book one in The McAllister Brothers series in which I was given an advanced reading copy. This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
