Don’t miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must investigate an attempted murder—a crime committed from a confoundingly long distance—in this riveting novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box.

When Joe Pickett is asked to join the rescue efforts for the victim of a startling grizzly attack, he reluctantly leaves his district behind. One survivor of the grizzly's rampage tells a bizarre story, but just as Joe begins to suspect the attack is not what it seems, he is brought home by an emergency on his own turf. Someone has targeted a prominent local judge, shooting at him from a seemingly impossible distance. While the judge was not hit, his wife is severely wounded, and it is up to Joe to find answers—and the shooter.

The search for the would-be assassin becomes personal when Nate Romanowski and his young family are targeted by the mysterious shooter. Beset by threats both man-made and natural, the two men must go to great lengths to keep their loved ones safe.

“Impressive precision and heart-gripping suspense....Good characters, an extra good story, and great scenes of life and death in the wilderness.”—New York Times Book Review

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett is on an assignment assisting another game warden involving the victim of a grizzly bear attack. Prior to arriving at the scene of the attack he is notified that he needs to return home immediately. A helicopter arrives at his location to transport him home. The wife of a prominent judge has been shot at home by a bullit entering through a window barely missing the judge and striking her as she was standing behind him. The search for the shooter unveils the incompetence of the new Sheriff as he arrests Joe’s good friend Nate Romanowski as the shooter. What next unfolds after Joe and his wife Marybeth start on investigation of their own unveils the shooter is the local doctor and his spotter the towns lead prosecutor. Twist and turns on every page. Non stop action and suspense!!! An excellent read!!! My highest recommendation!!

With every new Pickett book, Box thrills us. This one was just another fantastic read. With all of my favorite authors, as I get close to catching up ( I’m a little twisted in that I need to read every book in a series, in order) I find myself getting a little bummed at the thought of having to wait a year to read another on and only get to read one a year. I’m getting close now. But I’m not quite there. This one wove some old into some new. Going to be great to see what’s next. Irrationally, I think I want Joe to be the next Sheriff of Twelve Sleep County. LOL.

Interesting and fast moving story that keep the reader’s attention. Excellent technical detail and local details are great. The book requires a willing suspension of disbelief to make it work as a murder mystery.

Fast moving. No wasted pages. Villains you can loathe. Retribution you can revel in. And the plodding discipline of Joe Pickett evidencing character matters

Love the book just in concerned about the fact that the mad archer Ron Conelly was supposedly killed off by Nate Romanowski in force of nature and beginning of the book now he’s back to life in prison in Long Range
