Description

Return to the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering as the hunt for Liliana Vess is on in the aftermath of the War of the Spark.

The Planeswalkers have defeated Nicol Bolas and saved the Multiverse—though at grave cost. The living have been left to pick up the pieces and mourn the dead. But one loss is almost too great to bear: Gideon Jura, champion of justice and shield of the Gatewatch, is gone. As his former comrades Jace and Chandra struggle to rebuild from this tragedy, their future, like the future of the Gatewatch, remains uncertain.

As the Gatewatch’s newest member, Kaya aims to help write that future. In joining, she pledged an oath to protect the living and the dead, but now that oath will be tested. The grieving guild masters of Ravnica have tasked her with a grave mission suited to her talents as a hunter and assassin—a mission she is ordered to keep secret from the Gatewatch. She must track down and exact retribution on the traitor Liliana Vess.

But Liliana Vess has no interest in being found. Forsaken by her friends, she fled Ravnica after the defeat of Bolas. She was hostage to his wicked will, forced to assist in his terrible atrocities on pain of death—until Gideon, the last one who believed in her goodness, died in her place. Haunted by Gideon’s final gift, and hunted by former allies, Liliana now returns to a place she’d thought she’d never see again, the only place she has left: home.

Reviews

  • I don’t get the hate

When I saw the reviews, it was a lot of one stars, claims that it was the worst thing ever, etc. I heartily disagree. It isn’t an amazing piece of work, but then again few things are. What it DOES do is continue the story left over from WOTS in a very satisfying way. However, I will say there was at least one story decision I don’t like (that being the nature of atkos tarr) ,though that is a purely subjective thing and not a genuine critic of the book. All in all, a genuine good read and a worthy continuation of the story!

I greatly enjoyed the story and varied perspectives in this book! It was a lot of fun to read and I couldn’t put it down until I was finished.
  • Oh god why.

There are 82 chapters in a book that is 400 pages long. Also it has 15 different point of views. Putting aside its terrible effects on fan loved characters, social issues, and convoluted “got ya” moments this math just doesn’t add up. I want the 4 hours of my life back. Thankfully I bought this on Apple, or I would feel very sorry for the dead tree they printed on.
  • A Truly Epic Disaster

I walked into this novel with my expectations lowered as far as possible, with only the hope that Weismann could improve if given more freedom. Yet even these heavily curved standards were shattered, as this book promises upwards of 750 pages of frighteningly awful dialogue, irritating contempt for canon, baffling uprooting of entire character arcs, the offscreen death of a major character, and far more that escapes my mind at the moment. There are few pieces of literature that can make one hate what they used to love, however this disastrous conclusions of the Mtg story arc proves to be a notable exception.

After the first war of the spark novel, I didn’t think Greg Weismann could do any more harm to the ongoing magic story but boy howdy, was I wrong! Just, save yourself the trouble and don’t read this folks.
