The New Town: Columbia, Maryland was the vision of James Rouse, a Baltimore mortgage broker. He began acquiring land in 1962, eventually totalling 14,000 acres, The farm site land was in Howard County, half way between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and was purchased for $23.5 million cash. Other new towns being developed: Reston, VA, Jonathan, MN, Foster City, CA, and Flower Mound, TX.
