In September, 1970, Tom (twenty nine years old), resigned his commission at the Alameda Naval Station in Oakland and he returned to his home in Palo Alto as a civilian. Counting his four years at a military high school, four years at West Point, and seven and a half years on active duty, he had been in a uniform over fifteen years, more than half his life.
