SPIDER-MAN

Wilson Fisk--the so-called Kingpin of Crime--has returned to New York, establishing himself publicly as an altruistic entrepreneur and philanthropist. Spider-Man knows better, but he can't uncover Fisk's scheme that, if executed, will make the crime lord "too big to fail."

When a new threat--a deadly doppelganger with Spider-Man's suit and abilities--wreaks havoc in the streets, can the real wall-crawler prove his innocence? With the clock ticking and lives on the line, can Spider-Man stop the brutal rampage of the Blood Spider? Will Spider-Man fall to his fears and foes, or will he rise and be greater?

This prequel to one of the best video games yet by David Liss is simply a masterpiece. This story is not only about Spider-Man, but the struggles of Peter Parker, his antagonist’s character arc, and the feature of a very powerful female character. This is a Spider-Man fan must read, and take it from his #1 fan! Phenomenal job David!

While somewhat formulaic and predictable, Hostile Takeover excels at capturing the world and characters of Insomniac’s upcoming game. Or, at least, I hope it does. The novel builds a world that feels lived in and is true to what one would hope for in the characters. It succeeds in suspense and humor, with the exception of one anticlimactic character moment that was built up to throughout the book. Some recycled morality dilemmas make the ending feel forced. The book’s strength is in its characters, both old and new, both in portrayal and concept. The first two thirds of this book are excellent. The rest falls into cliched and predictable storytelling.
