Description

A New York Times bestseller and enduring classic, All About Love is the acclaimed first volume in feminist icon bell hooks' "Love Song to the Nation" trilogy.  All About Love reveals what causes a polarized society, and how to heal the divisions that cause suffering. Here is the truth about love, and inspiration to help us instill caring, compassion, and strength in our homes, schools, and workplaces.

“The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, renowned scholar, cultural critic and feminist bell hooks offers a proactive new ethic for a society bereft with lovelessness--not the lack of romance, but the lack of care, compassion, and unity. People are divided, she declares, by society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love.

As bell hooks uses her incisive mind to explore the question “What is love?” her answers strike at both the mind and heart. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the “100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life.” All About Love is a powerful, timely affirmation of just how profoundly her revelations can change hearts and minds for the better.

Hooks leaves no stone unturned as she analyzes the transformational power of love. This book is written from a scholarly perspective, so digest it slowly. In the mist of reading this book, I was encouraged to also listen to “A Return To Love” audiobook. It felt like the perfect combination for combining the feminist perspective of love with a deep spiritual one. life-changing!

This book has changed my mindset towards love. I would recommend this to anyone who is in a low point and feels alone. I was able to recognize how past traumas have played a part in romantic and family relationships. Bell Hooks did a great job with her reference work. Definitely worth re-reading multiple times.

I would disagree in saying that it is a book more for women than for men. In fact I would argue that it is just as important if not even more important for men to hear. In order to heal our society from these cultural notions, this patriarchal view of love (things like toxic masculinity and that there are inherent “differences” between men and women in loving) needs to be addressed. This book is important for men because it encourages us to be open about emotions and the role of love in our lives, and it teaches us to be better partners, parents, friends, and advocates for those who are more oppressed in our society. I think more men should seek self help books like this, this is not just a discourse for women alone.

The book had some interesting points and viewpoint about love, but overall mostly a book that should be read by woman. Not to say that men can’t learn something from reading this book

I heard so much rap about this book from so many people so I finally picked it up in March and it took me until May to finish it. I’m typically an avid reader and I realized what slowed me up is the moment I realized this book wasn’t a novel about love but moreso a dissertation or research paper. Bell Hooks references a lot of other sources regarding love topics. I was completely expecting a novel with characters, climax and close. Did I learn something? Of course… but I gave a 3 out of 5 because of all of the reference points and people. If it were a self help book I would have given the book an extra star.

A perspective on love that I didn’t know before. It makes you really wonder what love is and the lack thereof in our lives. I choose love.
