Description

Don’t miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in this electrifying novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author C.J. Box.

Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes--these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.

At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the Feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more Joe investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he's become Nate's advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he'd imagined.

CJ Box’s book and plots keep getting better and better. I am hooked and can’t wait to read the next one.

The book had several parallel plots throughout the story, which was good....but when I got to the end of the book, I was expecting closure and resolution of these plots. Didn’t happen! I couldn’t believe the book ended like it did. Didn’t know what happened to Joe, didn’t know what happened to the windmill company, didn’t know what happened to the new governor, didn’t know what happened to Kate...... When I invest my time reading books, I want to get something out of them when I finish. I didn’t come close to getting any satisfaction. Very disappointed!
  • Slow, dull, not the usual Joe Pickett novel quality

I have now read six of the Joe Pickett novels, and have enjoyed all of them but this one. The story drags, is dull, and never really gathers momentum. I like the Joe Pickett novels, but suggest this one could be skipped over.

I found the “Pickett” novels about six months ago. I was between books of several authors I read every year and looking for someone new. I was hooked in the first few chapters of Open Season. In that short space of time I have binge-read the remaining Box novels including The Disappeared. I’m captivated the character development of Joe, Nate, Marybeth, Sheridan and the rest as the mature and are weaved into these stories. Box’s lush and descriptive words about Wyoming and the West make me long for an opportunity to explore that area and experience for myself. Keep up the great work CJ, I can hardly wait to see where we go next!
