Description

The Golden Road is a vivid and moving children's classic, charting the childhood of Beverley, who reminisces about his younger days.
First published in 1913, this book demonstrates L. M. Montgomery's maturity of writing style. Her descriptive powers, particularly involving the adventures and play of Beverley, his friends, brother and cousins, paint a glorious and fun filled portrait of a rural childhood. Together the youngsters form a group, venture out into their family orchard, and even manage to publish their own newspaper called Our Magazine.
As the children grow up, they begin to form bonds with one another - most notably the affection between Peter and Felicity. Beverley as narrator implies that the two will be married eventually. Unusually for a novel of its genre, Montgomery chooses to make one character disabled due to tuberculosis - although never said outright, the narrator strongly implies the condition of his young cousin Cecily several times.
A much loved classic of children's literature, The Golden Road remains popular and widely read more than a century after its original publication.
