AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS

Why did you decide to write humor?

I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her.

The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design?

When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works.

PRAISE FOR THE LUCKY O’TOOLE VEGAS ADVENTURE SERIES

“Lucky’s story is funny, fast-paced, exuberant and brilliantly realized.” - Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Get ready to win big--with a novel that will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.” - Brenda Novak, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author

"More fun than a winning streak in Vegas. Lucky O’Toole is a character with brains, beauty, and a wry sense of humor. Readers will want to meet her again—and soon." - Diane Mott Davidson, New York Times bestselling author

"Deborah Coonts...entrusts the sleuthing to a brainy beauty who sees the lighter side of human folly." - New York Times Book Review

"Las Vegas is the perfect setting for this witty tale of misdirection and larger-than-life characters. Fans of J. A. Konrath's Jack Daniels series will love this." - Library Journal, starred review

A whirlwind of a kooky crime novel, and readers will enjoy every minute of it. Coonts provides the perfect solution for readers waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book.” - Booklist

Loved this book! But then I am hooked on the whole Lucky series. Great fun reads! One of the things I love is how the author lets us in on all the same clues Lucky pieces together so we can try to solve the murders with her. Please keep this series alive!

This is the ninth book that I’ve read by Deborah Coontz in the lucky series… Each time i finish a book I think “How can the next one possibly be better than this?!” And then I’m surprised and delighted that it is! I’m truly sad that I’m getting to the end of the series…They are greedy, and romantic, and deadly, filled with rich detail and emotion. I hope Deborah keeps writing… love love love them!

The Lucky books are exceptionally well written, with as many twists and turns as any good rollercoaster! Deborah Coonts writes with an amazing sense of humor; she makes me laugh while I read, just like Janet Evonavich does. The only real difference between the Lucky Series and the Stephanie Plum series, is that Lucky's story is newer, which means we have more to look forward to. And I can't wait! ;)

Deborah Coonts knows how to dangle the bait of a really interesting read, hook you, play out the line a bit and then reel you in for he climax. She mixes mystery, romance, suspense and thriller into a great read. She seasons Lucky with just enough introspection and emotional growth to have the readers identify with, if not all, many of Lucky's personal dilemmas. And lastly, the men...whew!

This book is the last in the series so far. I found the plot incredibly twisted and the characters very human. Which I believe is the best compliment I as a reader can give to the writer. Though this took me much longer to finish than the others in this series mostly because I knew I'd have to wait for the next one be written. If this is the first novel of the series you pickup it's a fun one but once you're done go back and read the others the main characters flesh out as they develop through the series and characters which seem one way you'll find out they aren't that way at all but more than that you'll find out their weaknesses that make them more real. While each of the books stands well on it's own as a series the whole is more than the sum of it's parts. Thank you Ms. Coonts for these books and please continue developing this series.

I always know that a new Deborah Coonts Lucky book will bring a thrilling adventure and Lucky Ride is no exception. Set during the PBR World Finals, and New Years, there is definitely a lot going on. Lucky is just back from her visit to Macau when things go awry in her beloved hometown. Coonts writes the Lucky books in first person which means you are definitely along for the ride with Lucky. Both Lucky and I were jetlagged as I was reading it, so it is hard to tell if things were really as strange as they seemed (probably). If you haven’t read the other books in the series this might not be the best place to start. Start at least a couple books back and catch up. The series is well worth it and on my must read list. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
