You’re Never Too Young to Fight Censorship!

In Ban This Book by Alan Gratz, a fourth grader fights back when From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg is challenged by a well-meaning parent and taken off the shelves of her school library. Amy Anne is shy and soft-spoken, but don’t mess with her when it comes to her favorite book in the whole world. Amy Anne and her lieutenants wage a battle for the books that will make you laugh and pump your fists as they start a secret banned books locker library, make up ridiculous reasons to ban every single book in the library to make a point, and take a stand against censorship.

  • Amazing Book About Censorship

I read this book in 5th grade and absolutely loved it. Other than being engaging and inspiring, it truly addresses the question of censorship and how no book should be banned. Because if we don’t learn about “bad” things, how we will prepare ourselves? How will we learn from previous mistakes? Even if it’s from an outdated or even discriminatory, it still helps us learn from previous horrible experiences. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves books and free speech.

You’re PUSHING youth to RIOT over someone taking something BAD out of your life. You know how it’s bad? Most books that are banned are for GOOD REASON. Like books about sex, death, violence, homicide, witchcraft, etc. IS THIS WHAT WE WANT FOR TODAY’S YOUTH? Think about it.

I love this book. Amy Anne really reminds me of myself. I’m shy and reserved. I’m a bit more outgoing now. Some of the books on the list I’ve read before. There is one book I want to ban though. Captain Underpants 🤮. I read this book for battle of the books and I love it.

This was a super enjoyable read! I did not want to stop at the end of every chapter I read. I would recommend this book 10 and up. I read it at age 10 and loved it. I didn’t know that people could even ban books and it teaches kids like me that you need to speak up when there is something that you don’t get. Amy Anne is a great character to listen to and this was an amazing book.

  • We shouldn’t hide knowledge

I absolutely agree with this book. Banning books is ignorant and heinous. Why would you ban knowledge? You can’t shelter kids forever and the sooner they know about the real world, the more equipped they will be in the future. Anyone who agrees with banning certain books needs to take a good hard look at themselves and ask why they want to hide opposing ideas instead of fairly challenging them with logic and reason.
