Description

Ernie Johnson Jr. has been in the game a long time. With one of the most recognized voices in sports broadcasting, he is a tireless perfectionist when it comes to preparing and delivering his commentary. Yet he knows that some of sports' greatest triumphs--and life's greatest rewards--come from those unscripted moments you never anticipated.

In this heartfelt, gripping autobiography, the three-time Sports Emmy Award-winner and popular host of TNT's Inside the NBA provides a remarkably candid look at his life both on and off the screen. From his relationship with his sportscaster father to his own rise to the top of sports broadcasting, from battling cancer to raising six children with his wife, Cheryl, including a special needs child adopted from Romania, Ernie has taken the important lessons he learned from his father and passed them on to his own children. This is the untold story, the one Ernie has lived after the lights are turned off and the cameras stop rolling. Sports fans, cancer survivors, fathers and sons, adoptive parents, those whose lives have been touched by a person with special needs, anyone who loves stories about handling life's surprises with grace--Unscripted is for all of these.

I saw the E:60 on Ernie in 2015 and remember thinking afterward that "everybody's got a story". I've always been a big fan of Inside the NBA....not just from being a sports fan (a gift from my dad), but because, as he mentions in the book, it is something fun where most other news today is anything but. My brother is also on the news and I have always admired not only what he does but his gift of being able to put a smile on your face while the rest of the news may be downright grim. Having watched their (Ernie, Charles, Kenny, and Shaq) show for years, I almost didn't watch the E:60 special because I felt I already knew him. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was left wanting to know more. Fast forward 2 years...I see a promo for Ernie's story for Father's Day 2017. My initial feeling was not a good one...I practice medicine as a PA and instantly thought about Michael's MD. I feared the outcome was not good. And, being a proud parent of 2 toddler boys, the last thing I wanted was to feel that type of pain for somebody I'll never meet. Despite fearing the worse, I watched anyway. It was the same episode that was aired 2 years prior (with the exception of the Reds' Michael Lorenzen story...which was also heart wrenching). Which, I'll admit, I was more than ok with because of what I was fearing. At the end of the episode, they promoted Ernie's book...something I couldn't buy fast enough. (I thought I posted this review in June but a friend recently told me he never saw it...which is how I learned it didn’t post.) This was phenomenal. A true blackberry from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. I feel it would be inappropriate to give specifics as to not give anything away. I have, and will continue to, encouraged my family and friends to read this. I hope this review has sparked enough interest to give it a go. You will not be disappointed. Ernie...thank you for this blackberry.
