Description

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes her first women's fiction novel—an unforgettable story of friendship, love, family, and sisterhood—perfect for fans of Colleen Hoover, Susan Mallery, and Kristan Higgins.

They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.'s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she's looking for a missing piece she can't find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn't quite fit in right away, she can't help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there's another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn't a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she's searched so long for.

I absolutely adore Jill Shalvis's writing, and this book might just be my favorite of her books. I can't even pick a genre to put it in, because it touches on three different ones off the top of my head. Quinn is a sweet heroine, who has seriously been through the wringer the past few years. I loved the interaction she had with her sisters, and how open she was with her heart, even if she didn't seem to think it. Tilly and Beth both keep her on her toes, and it had me cracking up at the buttons Tilly was always pushing. Now, we throw in Mr. Sexy Mick, who is a bit alpha, with a side of hero. A beautifully written story that's equal parts contemporary romance and women's fiction, that I would definitely recommend

Life takes away and gives back. Quinn lost her sister Beth two year earlier in a car accident and has been going through the motions of life but not living. Quinn now finds out that not only was she adopted but she has another sister with her biological mother who needs her. In walks Mick back in a town he hates and trying to help his mom get things in order after the passing of his dad. The last thing Mick wants is ties to this town but that is exactly what he found. These two sisters need each other so much and throw in Mick to that mix as well and they finally realize that having each other is the important thing. Beautiful story of loss, life and love. I couldnt' put it down.

Quinn has suffered a tragic loss with her sister now gone for two years. The news she gets that sets her back even more, causes her to go looking for the why. Arriving in the sleepy town, she finds there is someone else who suffered a loss that needs her. Mick is just back visiting his mother. Trying to help her move on from the pain and the house that haunts them both. Meeting Quinn makes staying in town a bit more exciting. She is in need of a steady hand, and it could be his that helps her up. Sweet and fragile are two words I thought while reading this novel. It has many great pieces that make it fun and still the author's work. I just found it a bit slower than the norm. The high points were the sexy times and the banter. You should never miss those. ***This early copy was given in exchange for an honest review.

Adorably laugh-out-loud funny, emotionally raw and heartwarmingly REAL! With a roller coaster of life handing out a little more than the average gal can bear, Jill Shalvis takes us on an adventure of seeing the amount of grit it takes to forage through a life you never expected to be a part of to come out stronger on the other side. The characters are down to earth and super easy to love, and the story line is addictive. Really enjoyed going on this journey with Quinn! Quinn Wellers has just been going through the motions of life for the last two years since losing her sister to a horrible car accident. She's living the life some people dream of ... loving parents, a great job at a popular L.A. hot spot and a handsome boyfriend just waiting in the wings to slip that diamond on her finger ... yet all she feels is empty, numb and lost. Just when she thinks she can't handle another person's expectations piled on to those already drowning her, she is contacted by a lawyer from a little town a couple of hours down the coast who claims she has some mysterious inheritance awaiting her that she has to come to Wildstone, CA herself to claim. She's not sure what this guy's end game is, but she decides to make the trip to get some answers. With the rug pulled out from under her, and discovering her whole life has been a lie, Quinn sets out to try to pick up the pieces and figure out how to move forward. She wasn't expecting this turn in her life, but she can't deny that she's feeling more alive than she has in a long time as she makes the journey through yesterdays in search of a tomorrow!

Mick…aahhh. This book left me with such a feeling of happiness. The chapter quotes! I LOVE them, and every one got me to either laugh or had me thinking. I don’t like to reveal too much about the story but I loved when Quinn talked with her sister Beth. And I loved her fear of spiders. Hmmmm..who does that remind us of? And the scene with the bee and her underwear had me laughing out loud. I loved how she thought Mick was Maintenance man. I loved the instant spark connection between them from their first time meeting on the beach. I love this line…”Are you flirting with me?” she asks. “Trying. The question is, are you flirting back?”…so good!!! Jill really draws me into every story. I feel every emotion and then some. I received an ARC for an honest review. I’m a huge huge fan of Jill!!
  • this is a wonderful introduction to a new series, and another winner from Shalvis.

Grief is a quirky emotion, and no two people ever react quite the same. Quinn is one of those who found relief and escape in numbness: after her sister’s death she lost her best friend and nothing has felt right since. And in some sense, she feels guilty about that numbness, for from the outside she has almost everything: her dream job as a sous chef in a trendy LA restaurant, a loving family and a man who is only hoping she’ll open her arms again to him. But, despite all the good – there’s nothing: no celebration, no hope, no real sadness: just an empty hole where her heart should be. And then, the one thing that brought her emotions to the surface for a moment – an inheritance tied to a shocking secret – and she’s curious enough to investigate. Wildstone is a throwback town, feeling very wild-wild west, a bit run down and the only reason Quinn found it is because of this secret and the inheritance. But Mick left Wildstone in his rear-view mirror as soon as possible. The homegrown boy wanted more and different, and needed to be out from under his father’s thumb. With a successful business in San Francisco he’s not interested in Wildstone or a relationship, but his mother needs his help. With his trusty and totally adorable dog Cooper, he’s been helping his mother out and doing chores long-overdue. Quinn’s inheritance included part ownership of both a house and the diner in town: but that’s not the tough part. With the unburied secrets, she’s facing a crisis and many questions: so much so that she’s spotted by Mick on the beach in the midst of a panic attack. Of course, the first emotions she feels, really feels in ages is panic – and that just opened a floodgate to feel everything. Quietly the attraction between Quinn and Mick sparks, as he’s patient, quietly accepting and not ready to push her too far or too fast. Here is where Shalvis is at her best: characters that you NEED to know and want to befriend, a connection that sparks off the pages and a series of questions and answers that couldn’t be any more fitting: laughs, tears and serious moments of aww – this is a wonderful introduction to a new series, and another winner from Shalvis. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I just finished this and I loved it!!! I finished it in one sitting!!! If I could I would give it 10 stars. I had a few moments of panic in the beginning because it had me bawling like a baby, the sorrow was so palpable I could feel it screaming from the pages!! It took me back to when I lost my Dad. That loss came crushing back onto my heart and I almost couldn't breathe!! Well done Jill Shalvis!! It takes powerful writing to evoke such emotion!! I loved all of the characters!! I loved their small neck of the woods and would live there tomorrow if it were real. Thank you for another fabulous read.!!!
