Description

Jeremy Heere is your average high school dork. Day after day, he stares at beautiful Christine, the girl he can never have, and dryly notes the small humiliations that come his way. Until the day he learns about the "squip." A pill-sized supercomputer that you swallow, the squip is guaranteed to bring you whatever you most desire in life. By instructing him on everything from what to wear, to how to talk and walk, the squip transforms Jeremy from Supergeek to superchic.

  • If you think this is like the musical, you’re wrong.

This book is like many books that try to talk about the “real gritty” teenage experience. However unlike books that fail to give an actual story true to the teenage experience, such as “Stones to Abbigail” (don’t bother reading that one, it’s a waste of time, brain power, and money, unless you want to make fun of it) “Be More Chill” doesn’t have a Mary Sue protagonists, in fact, the protagonist knows he isn’t a good person. Clearly Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz read this book because there are many details in the book that make their way into the show, minute ones, but in essence, the musical and this book are only the same in name, Squip, and similar events. It’s a completely different experience, and it’s worth a read. Just don’t expect the same experience as the musical, please don’t make the mistake I did going in.

I know people have said that the author made Christine mean, but the book was written before the musical.

Not worth it. I love the musical, but DON’T PICK IT UP BECAUSE OF THE MUSICAL. You will be very disappointed. It’s at best mediocre. The characters don’t act like people, Jeremy is boring, and the plot concludes in the most convoluted and strange yet boring way possible.

I LOVE the musical for Be More Chill. The writers deserve a lot of commendation for what they did to make that story interesting and thought provoking from this sexist, misogynistic GARBAGE! Jeremy’s only personality traits are objectifying women and being a toxic person. Christine has ZERO personality. Just to give you a sense of the difference between musical Jeremy (awkward but ultimately pretty sweet) and this Jeremy, here’s just ONE thing that happens in the book that is NEVER dealt with and written off as “boys being boys”: Jeremy goes to the party at Rich’s house and joins in a pyramid of boys to watch one of them sleeping with a girl WITHOUT HER KNOWLEDGE, complains he “can’t see anything”, and agrees with other boys that they’ll “have to wait for the pictures to be uploaded” because, oh yeah, someone is PHOTOGRAPHING them having sex WITHOUT HER CONSENT. Additionally, there are no black people in this book and yet the author felt comfortable having a grown white man use the n-word (in reference to an album, but there was no reason for this. As far as I’m aware, the album is made up) These are in addition to other equally serious issues that come up in most chapters. I know it’s thought poorly of to speak ill of an author who is dead, but this added nothing to this genre that was needed. It reinforces rape-y behaviors and writes them off with no real thought to how it affects the victims and no apologies. The writing is also very stilted and random at times. It is easily the worst book I have ever read and I’m disappointed that Apple is recommending it on their front page right now (March 2019) as it has almost nothing but basic plot points in common with the musical. Not worth the time. Listen to the soundtrack again.

Despite being different from the musical, which is expected, the book is funny, entertaining and unsurprisingly sexual. This is a great book and you should definently read!
